Add an email account
If you’re on a Mac, you can set up your email accounts in macOS mail. This is often a preferred method simply because you won’t need a browser to view your email. Mail is a standard component of Mac computers. This app gives you basic abilities when it comes to sending and receiving messages.
- 10 Best Email Apps for Mac 1. Apple Mail, also known simply as the Mail app, is the default email client on macOS. As is characteristic for apps from Apple, the Mail app is a simple, polished piece of software designed to streamline your email conversations and make your life easier with search filters and support for multiple email.
- Just like that, your Mac is a powerful server. MacOS Server brings even more power to your business, home office, or school. Designed to work with macOS and iOS, macOS Server makes it easy to configure Mac and iOS devices. It’s also remarkably simple to install, set up, and manage.
- After you set up your Gmail account, open the Mail application on your Mac by clicking its icon in the Dock. In the left column, under Inbox, you'll see Google listed along with Apple's own iCloud mail and any other mail accounts you've entered. Click on Google to read and reply to your Gmail.
If you haven't already set up an email account in Mail, you might be prompted to add one when you open the app. If you're not prompted, or you just want to add another account, follow these steps:
- From the menu bar in Mail, choose Mail > Add Account.
- Select your email provider from the list, then click Continue.
- Some accounts, such as Google, might ask that you click Open Browser to complete authentication in your web browser.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to enter account details, such as your name, email address, and password. If you're not sure what information to enter, please contact your email provider for help.
Use the Inbox for each account
The Inbox gathers together the messages for every email account you added. If you added more than one account, you can click the disclosure triangle next to Inbox in the sidebar, then select a mailbox to see only the messages for that account.
Optional: Turn on other account features
If your account includes support for contacts, calendars, notes, or other features in addition to email, you can turn those features on or off:

SMTP, POP3 and IMAP are different ways your email program (say, Outlook) communicates with your email provider (CenturyLink). Here are some simplified explanations:

- POP3 (Post Office Protocol)—Like its name implies, POP3 is the equivalent of the post office. It's for storing your email.
- SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)—SMTP gets your email from one place to the next, routing it between servers and eventually to your computer desktop. An SMTP port sends an email through a network and to its recipient. If you were sending snail mail, it would be the mailman. CenturyLink filters port 25 for increased security. Learn more about port 25 filtering.
- IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)—IMAP is a fancier version of POP3. For instance, with IMAP, you can keep your email on the server, something you can't do with POP3. IMAP requires more server space and computing power to operate. We don't currently support IMAP.
